2008 MPI Board of Management

Dave West (Chair)

Dave West is the Chairman of the mineral Policy Institute, joining the board on December 2007. Dave. He is past Executive Committee member of the NSW Nature Conservation Council, and a past Director and Treasurer of the Climate Action Network Australia (CANA).

Professionally Dave runs a small consultancy that works exclusively for Australian environment groups providing strategic advice and capacity building. Recent career highlights include establishing Australia’s leading corporate sustainability program Green Capital for Total Environment Centre; founding Australia leading voice for waste avoidance and resource recovery, the Boomerang Alliance; and leading the successful campaign to introduce Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery in Western Australia in 2007. He has been published a number of times particularly in the areas of resource recovery, climate change, and on the application of market based instruments for environmental protection. Dave has written regular columns for both Australian Ethical Investment magazine and Waste and Environmental management magazine.

Dave has undergraduate degrees in both Arts and Valuation and a Masters in Business Administration.

Robyn Chapple (General Member)

Robin is a consultant on mining and industry matters in Western Australia. He operates Chapple Research which was established in 1993 out of the need to provide to an impartial environmental/social impact consultancy to communities, local authorities and local industry. Chapple Research provided guidance and expertise to community groups, local authorities and established local business/industry on the effects of projects or developments that might induce environmental, social or financial impact on existing communities or infrastructure. In May 1993 he conducted an evaluation of the proposed stockpiling, handling and shipment of iron ore through the Port of Esperance, which led to the first Iron Ore stockpiles, anywhere in Australia being placed in hermetically sealed sheds and the first environmental dust levels to be imposed anywhere in Australia that go beyond the requirements of the National Health and Medical Guidelines, the requirements of the Ministerial statement being that "No Dust" will be allowed beyond the proponents boundary.

He was the former Member for Mining and Pastoral, elected February 2001 to State Parliament of Western Australia. His parliamentary portfolios included energy and renewables, local government, aboriginal issues, mining issues - uranium and oil, emergency services, democracy & electoral affairs, employment & industrial relations, heavy industry, national parks and pastoral issues.



Paul Winn (General Member)

Paul Winn joined the MPI Board in March 2007. He is an environmentalist and President of the Hunter Community Environment Centre, founding member of Rising Tide, Vice President of the North Coast Environment Council (NSW) and held a position as Marine Campaigner for the National Parks Association of NSW. He has qualifications in law and science and is currently the Forests and Climate Campaigner
Greenpeace Australia Pacific.
