History of MPI

MPI was formed in 1995, in response to the rapid internationalisation of the Australian minerals industry and the increasing number of requests for assistance from communities and NGO's in the Asia Pacific region, and in particular for information on Australian companies and the mining industry.

Australia is home to many of the largest mining companies in the world, and MPI is in a key position to influence and change the practices of these companies, and consequentially industry practices globally. MPI has developed extensive resources, expertise and information systems and remains the only specialist organisation focussing on the mining, minerals and energy sector across Australia and the Asia Pacific.

MPI has been at the forefront of the movement to develop and increase international controls on mining developments, co-ordinating public interest responses to threats posed by mining across local, national, regional and global arenas.
