Climate Change

Climate change is one of the greatest threats to the human and natural worlds. Its impacts are already affecting people and the planet, and science predicts they will only worsen. The biggest impacts will be on the lives and livelihoods of the poor and developing countries, especially small island states- those who are least responsible for climate change. At the heart of the problem is the production and use of fossil fuel – particularly the emissions of carbon dioxide from the burning of coal, oil and gas. more»

Cyanide/Gold

Some states and countries have already banned the use of cyanide in mining, or decided that it should not be used in particular mining projects. These include the American state of Montana as well as a number of other local level municipalities across the world. more»

Financing

Is your money being used to finance destruction? Whether it is public moneys that your government directs into the World Bank or other public lending institutions, or your own private savings in your local bank or superannuation fund, is your money being used to fund projects that destroy sustainable livelihood and breach the human rights of marginalised communities? more»

Aboriginal Art Indigenous

Much of the economic development which large mines create comes at the expense of indigenous people. Many indigenous groups have a sacred conection with the land which is broken when mining companies forcibly remove people from their land. more»

Militarism

MPI is opposed to the practice of mining company’s payments to armed forces to act as security at mine sites. This practice is especially dangerous where local communities are in conflict with the company, and is frequently associated with grave human rights violations including cruel and inhuman treatment, arbitrary detention and killings, and the suppression of civil and political freedoms. more»

Policy

Despite much posturing around the issue of corporate social responsibility, much remains amiss in the mining industries response to sustainability issues. Read a version of an article by MPI Director, Techa Beaumont published in the Ethical Investor magazine more»

Protected Areas

The currently drought afflicted, heavily salinated and over utilised Murray Darling Basin (MDB) is facing yet another layer of exploitation within its boundaries. Mineral sand deposits have been discovered in the region and a sand mining industry raked by controversy from operations in WA and along the east coast of Australia, is moving in to capitalise on these discoveries amid growing global demand for Titanium products. more»

Human Rights

Mining activities across the globe violate the fundamental rights of disadvantaged groups including indigenous people, women, children, workers and local communities. There are major gaps in domestic and international legal regimes that allow corporations to evade responsiblity or accountabilty for human rights violations. more»

Mine Waste

Safe disposal of mine waste, including tailings, is generally recognized as the single largest environmental challenge facing the mining industry worldwide and a major expense for mining companies. more»
