The threat of climate change
Australia is one of the world's largest coal producers and exporters, but is doing far less than its fair share to respond to this problem. Carbon Hypocrisy: The Australian government has justified its failure to ratify the Kyoto Protocol on the basis that the treaty does not require mandatory cuts in emissions from developing countries. At the same time, Australia is the world's largest exporter of coal, a major greenhouse gas emitter, and actively promotes the entrenchment of fossil fuel based energy sources in developing countries, locking in increased greenhouse gas emissions and exacerbating climate change. It has also refused to accept 'climate refugees' from Tuvalu when the people of the small island nation require relocation from rising seawater levels.
"Socially Responsible Climate Change?": Read our report that investigates investments in fossil fuels under the banner of socially responsible investment. At the time of its release, all but one of sixteen Australian SRI firms included at least one investment in the fossil fuel industries. In contrast only one only nine of the funds invest in renewable energy companies. MPI believes that SRI money must be directed towards carbon free and renewable energy futures and eased out of energy sources taht are detrimental to local and global communites. LINK TO SRI CLIMATE CHANGE "Up In Smoke: Australian Coal Exports to SOuth East Asia": Coal is Australia's largest export and Australia is the world's largest exporter of coal. The fossil fuel lobby has had an enormous influence on Australian policy, including appointments to key government offices and to strategic policy making bodies. This report identifies key government, industry and financial institutions players that are promoting coal dependency in both Australia and South East Asia, and some of the subsidies and research support that is provided to the industry at the expense of cliamte abatement alternatives. Climate Justice: The negative impacts of climate change, and of the industries that exacerbate climate change are felt disproporitionaly by certain communities and peoples, while the benefits of these industries are unevenly and inequitably distributed. Just Transitions From Dinosaur Industries: The Mineral Policy Institute supports and advocates for just transitions from fossil fuel dependency to renewable energy alternatives, particulariliy for workers and communities in miing regions and for consumers who depend on fossil fuel for energy needs. LINK TO SOMETHING FROM GEOFF No New Coal: Hunter Valley ? Australia On a positive note.... In 2004 the NSW State Government rejected the Redbank Power Station based on its greenhouse emissions. Members of the Climate Action Network Australia placed a submission opposing the Power Station on grounds of its emissions. LINK to submission In one of the first decisions of its kind, Australian Conservation Foundation v Minister for Planning [2004] VCAT 2029, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (“VCAT”) has ordered that the planning panel considering submissions in relation to a planning scheme amendment under the Planning and Environment Act 1987 (Vic) to expand a coal mine to extend the operation of a major coal-fired power station by 20 years cannot exclude submissions about the greenhouse gas implications of using brown coal. Four conservation groups, WWF Australia, Environment Victoria, The Climate Action Network Australia, and the Australian Conservation Foundation, objected to the planning scheme amendment on the basis of greenhouse gas emissions. MPI is a member of the Climate Action Network Australia... LINK to CANA
