Mining Sacred Ground: Aboriginal Art Exhibition and ForumsEVENTS: Mining Sacred Ground Exhibition, Public Forum, Workshop and Fundraiser: 31st March - 14th April at Boomalli Gallery "Mining Sacred Ground" is a collaboration between the Mineral Policy Institute, Boomali Aboriginal Artist Co-operative and activists, artists and elders from mine-affected Aboriginal communites in N.S.W. The exhibition provides a voice to artists in Aboriginal communities in N.S.W to explore and express the impacts of mining upon their culture, communities and lands. Significant bodies of work will be shown from the Wiradjuri Nation, where the Lake Cowal mine is proposed in what is the sacred heartland of the Wiradjuri people, and from the Yuwalaraay and Gamilaroi nations around Lightning Ridge, where an expansion of existing opal mines threatens burial ground, dreaming tracks and cultural heritage around Narran Lakes, a traditional meeting place for various tribes across the region. It will explore creative activism and the role of art in progressing social change, and opportunities to contribute to efforts to achieve respect for Aboriginal land rights, cultural heritage and sacred sites. Workshops with Nat Lowrey (Friends of the Earth), Graham Dunstan (Peacebus.com), Al Oshlack (Indigenous Justice Advocacy Network), Techa Beaumont (Mineral POlicy Institute). Saturday 8th April 8pm onwards: MPI FunRAISER For the Rock : Deep Child, Luke Snarl, Theatre of Disco, MC Wire and MORE: & Check the MPI website for final details, workshops and films, kicking on into the evening with performance artists, MCs , DJs and live acts.
