Senate Report: Mines and World Heritage Don't Mix
Mineral Policy Institue Calls for Moratorium on Mines in World Heritage Areas.
Yesterday the Senate Environment, Communications, Information Technology and the Arts References Committee released its report ‘Regulating the Ranger, Jabiluka, Beverley and Honeymoon uranium mines’.
MPI believes the report is a damning indictment on the management of Australia’s most famous World Heritage Area: Kakadu in the Alligator Rivers Region. The report shows that both the company and Federal Government regulators have allowed hundreds of contamination incidents to go unreported and unmitigated to the detriment of the World Heritage Area.
MPI project officer Anne Harrison said, ‘This report shows that the Federal Government is not adequately protecting our World Heritage Areas. Current mining proposals threaten the Blue Mountains and Willandra Lakes Heritage Areas in NSW . A moratorium must be placed on all mine operations in or adjacent to World Heritage Areas.’
Mineral sands mining proposals are currently being considered by both the Federal and NSW State Government for sites adjacent to both the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area and the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area. Impacts from the mines will seriously jeopardise the ecological, biodiversity and cultural values of the World Heritage Areas.
Anne Harrison , MPI Project Officer said, ‘ This report proves that mines and World Heritage Areas do not mix.'
