Mining at Rum Jungle to recommmence

No New Mine at Rum Jungle

Rum Jungle was home to the Territory's first (and most polluting) uranium mine, which environmentalists say was never adequately rehabilitated.  Now mining company Compass Resources plans to revive mining operations at Rum Jungle.

Last year, around 100 locals attended a public meeting in Batchelor to grill Compass representatives about their plans for the Rum Jungle region. While Compass assured locals that Browns will not be a uranium mine, the ore does include significant (though not commercially viable) levels of uranium.

Environmentalists warn that mining operations would mobilize and disperse this uranium into the local environment.

A website has been launched in opposition to plans by mining company Compass Resources to revive mining operations at Rum Jungle.  The new website, www.compass-resources.info, features documents from local and national environment groups, recommending that : 'Rum Jungle needs rehabilitation, not more radioactive pollution!'
