Mission
The Mineral Policy Institute is a Pacific based civil society organisation committed to ithe principles of social justice, human rights and responsible development through improving the environmental and social performance of the mining industry, in Australia, the Pacific and internationally.
How we work
The Institute achieves its objectives through working with communities, organisations, corporations and governments, researching, advocating and promoting best practice in the mining industry. Special emphasis is given to assisting those most in need to respond to adverse environmental, cultural and social impacts of mining.
Vision
To be the leading authority on environmental, cultural and social impacts of mining within Australia and the Pacific with the capacity, knowledge and expertise to assist and empower communities to respond to mining issues leading to improvements in specific projects, policy, law and practice.
Three Year Goals

To improve the capacity of the local communities we work with to make free, prior and informed decisions about mining developments.

To reduce the total footprint and pollution from mines and exploration.

To prevent or reduce the effect of harmful mining practices.

To be a healthy, vibrant and strong organisation with a representative and independent board, diverse funding, a growing membership base, excellent operations systems and a committed, well trained and resilient staff team.
MPI has identified and is committed to the following objectives

To reduce and minimise negative adverse social, cultural and environmental impacts from mining.

To promote mineral efficiency policies and practices as a means of reducing adverse impacts from the mining.

To ensure the restoration of environments detrimentally affected by mining.

To ensure the good management of existing mineral exploration and mining projects.

To prevent the development of projects which would adversely affect areas of natural or social significance or are inconsistent with the principles of responsible development.
