Australia is in Asia's backyard, so the operations of Australian companies inthe region is a primary focus for MPI, with a number of controversial mining activities centered in some of the worlds poorest nations. Heavy metal contamination through riverine and ocean tailings disposal methods in the Philippines and Indonesia are concerns from both human and environmental perspectives.

Europe
Europe has seen some substantial mining issues arise, including a massive cyanide spill which occurred at an Australian-owned gold operation in Romania, killing fish and rendering water undrinkable. The 100,000 cubic metres of cyanide solution entered River Szamos, then the Tisza river which flows from Romania to Hungary and Serbia then into the Danube. more»

The Mineral Policy Insitute has a number of partner campaigns in North America with Earthworks, Mines and Communities and Mining Watch Canada. In the United States, cleaning up abandoned hard rock mines and reforming archaic mineral legislation are of major concern. In Canada, Metal Mine Effluent Regulation, Environmental Assessment of Mining and Asbestos Mining Operations are of major concern. more»

The Pacific
Mpi is concerned with a number of issues currently occuring in the Pacific Region. Mining development has not as yet become extensive in this region. There is however, a lot of mining planned. Much of our work is in Papua New Guinea, other concerns include the Inco Goro Mining Project and and other planned regional mining development. more»

The Mineral Policy Institute is concerned with three mining projects in South America. BHP Billion conducts questionable operations in the a number of locations on this continent including El Cerrejon, Columbia and Escondida, Chile. Newmont’s Operations in South America include Yanacocha, Peru and are also the focus of MPI activity. more»
