Rio Tinto head claims tailings are not toxic
Shareholders queries were met with inadequate responses from the Rio Tinto board at their annual general meeting held in Brisbane on 24th April 2008, including the outlandish claim by Paul Skinner that mine tailings dumping into the river from the notorious Freeport mine are not toxic.

Phu Bia Mine- already in trouble
The Phu Bia mine, owned by Pan Australian Resources has already spilt cyanide into the nearby river system, causing a major fish kill and poisoning local villagers- and it is only in start up mode. The company reports on the 'incident' fail to mention that 100s of villagers were made ill, and that the Laos government demanded compensation.

Indonesian Constituional Court Prevents Oz Mining Companies Destruction Of Protected Forests
In a recent decision of the Indonesian constitutional court, a number of Indonesia’s sensitive forests have escaped devastation from proposals for open cut mining operations by foreign companies that include Australian mining giant BHP Billiton. The decision could signal the final nail in the coffin of BHP Billiton’ Gag Island project which had been subject to significant shareholder concerns over the issue of mining in protected forests as well as proposals to dump the mine waste in the marine environment within the Raj Ampat Archipelago, an area recommended for World Heritage Listing.
