Locals say no to BHP Billiton's Pujada Bay nickel mining activities

Local communitites at Pujada Bay in the Philippines urge BHP Billiton to respect their wishes and have indicated their opposition mining in their area. A petition of over 800 people opposing the project is further suppported by resolutions of two out of the three local level government units which have oppposed any mining in the sensitive region that includes protected terrestrial and marine areas.    more»

Over 2600 Participate in an Anti-Mining Caravan which Culminates in Dipolog City

Cries to 'Scrap the Mining Act' and 'Defend Patrimony' were heard nationwide on June 10, 2005 as Diocesan Social Action Centers organized protests against the Government's current efforts to encourage large-scale mining investment. Synchronized diocesan mining caravans were held in Ilagan, the DADITAMA subregion (Davao, Digos, Tagum, Mati), Pagadian, Ozamis, and Dipolog city. As the caravans travelled, 'lightening rallies' were held in every town center and pastoral letters and mining convention agreements were read. In the Zamboangan Peninsula alone, over 4600 people gathered in Pagadian and Dipolog City.    more»

Renewed calls for Lafayette’s Rapu Rapu mine to be permanently halted - major fish kill renews fears of mine contamination.

Troubled miner Lafayette is the subject of local protests with reports of over a thousand locals from Rapu Rapu island holding protests outside the offices of the municipal government today. The discovery of a massive fish kills three days ago after heavy rains on the island has led to renewed calls for the closure of Lafayette’s Rapu Rapu mine- with fears that mine contamination is to blame for the latest incident.    more»
