BHP Billion conducts questionable operations in the a number of locations on this continent including El Cerrejon, Columbia and Escondida, Chile. Newmont’s Operations in South America include Yanacocha, Peru and are also the focus of MPI activity.

Forced Displacement at the El Cerrejon Norte Mine
The community of Tabaco is one of various Indigenous and Afro Colombian communities who have been forcibly, and in cases violently displaced with the expansion of the world's largest coal mine. The companies involve continue to drag their feet in rectifying these circumstances, where families have lost lands, livelihood and homes without being fairly or justly compensated for these losses

El Cerrejon
The El Cerrejon mine is one of the world's largest open pit coal mines, it is located on or adjoining to Wayuu indigenous land in Guajira, northern Colombia. The former residents of the community of Tabaco, close to the mine site, still await an adequate relocation settlement from the mining company, Carbones del Cerrejon.

Yanacocha
The Yanacocha gold mine in Peru is the largest gold mine in Latin America, and the second largest in the world. The mine represents a danger to the local community because of spills of toxic chemicals. It has also caused a social division disruptive to the local community.

NGOs Condemn BHP Billiton´s Human Rights Abuses In Colombia
NGOs strongly condemn BHP Billiton’s conduct in operating its Cerrejón Norte coal mine in Colombia. BHP Billiton and its consortium partners are on the verge of forcibly displacing a number of Wayuu Indigenous and Afro Colombian communities with no compensation to make way for the expansion of the mine, already the worlds largest. The mine lies in part on or adjoins Wayuu indigneous land in the province of Guajira.
